LEAD, S.D. (Oct. 1, 2025) — The Sanford Underground Research Facility is accepting applications for its 2026 Artist-in-Residence program, inviting one artist to create work inspired by the science conducted a mile underground in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

SURF, the deepest underground laboratory in the United States, hosts experiments spanning physics, biology, geology and engineering. The Artist-in-Residence program encourages interdisciplinary work bridging the arts and sciences and is modeled after programs at institutions such as the National Park Service, CERN and Fermilab.

Launched in 2019, the residency is a partnership between SURF and Black Hills State University. It is coordinated by Gina Gibson, BHSU professor of graphic communication and SURF’s first artist in residence.

The application deadline is Nov. 1, 2025. For details and to apply, visit the SURF AiR webpage. Questions can be directed to coordinator Gina Gibson at [email protected].
