BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota FFA members are receiving national recognition for their achievements in agriculture through the National FFA Proficiency Award program.
The awards honor FFA members who develop career-ready skills through supervised agricultural experiences, or SAEs. Students can apply in one of 45 areas, ranging from fruit production to beef and swine entrepreneurship.
This year, Beresford FFA member Elena Andrews has been selected as a national finalist in the Swine Production Placement category. Andrews will present her project virtually to judges ahead of the 98th National FFA Convention, which takes place in October in Indianapolis. Winners will be recognized on stage during the national event.
Alongside Andrews’ achievement, South Dakota FFA members earned additional honors at the national level. Six applications received a Gold ranking, 17 were awarded Silver, and 14 earned Bronze.
The South Dakota FFA Foundation provides travel stipends for national finalists to help cover expenses. Sponsors for this year’s support include Gro Master Inc., Wally and Kathy Knock, and Kevin and Sandy Ortberg.
The recognition underscores the strength of FFA programs across South Dakota, from Brookings to Rapid City and throughout the Black Hills, where students continue to grow skills that prepare them for future careers in agriculture.
