RAPID CITY—City Parks and Rec officials will once again turn the Jimmy Hilton Sioux Park pool over to the dogs…literally!

One of Rapid City’s most popular summer events is set to take place Sunday, August 31 with the 10th annual Wags and Waves fundraiser event, hosted by the Humane Society of the Black Hills.  The event is scheduled from 1-4 p.m.

Event organizers are promising a doggone good time for canines and caretakers. The event will include dog-friendly pool time, a fun photo booth, and a VIP sponsor swim.

The event allows dogs to take over the pool before water is drained out and the City pool facility is put under wraps for the winter season.

Wags and Waves is the top fundraiser for the Humane Society each year, attracting hundreds of dogs and their caretakers.  Dogs from all over the community are allowed to take a swim.  All donations and sponsorships go to another year of caring for the animals housed at the Humane Society of the Black Hills. Needs include food for dogs, cats and exotic animals as well as medical expenses and overall care.  The fundraising goal this year is $25,000.

A $10 donation per animal is requested at the gate and proceeds support the Humane Society of the Black Hills, supporting the care of more than 5,000 animals.  The public is also encouraged to drop off donations of pet food. Pet owners wishing to purchase advance tickets can go online to the Humane Society of the Black Hills’ Facebook page.

For more information about the event, contact Tammy Barrows at the Humane Society at 605-721-1011 or email [email protected] .

A few rules apply for the event: dogs must be under their owner’s supervision and control at all times; dogs can swim freely but humans cannot go in the water above their knees; and owners are asked to pick up after their pets to keep the pool area neat and clean.
