RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Regional Airport donated $2,000 to Cornerstone Rescue Mission through its ongoing “Empty Pockets = Full Plates” program, continuing a local partnership aimed at addressing food insecurity in Rapid City and the Black Hills.
The program encourages passengers to donate spare change as they pass through the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint. As travelers empty their pockets for screening, loose coins are collected and directed to Cornerstone Rescue Mission to support meals and essential services for individuals and families in the Rapid City area.
“We are so grateful for the Rapid City Regional Airport, and all of the customers who donate to Cornerstone Rescue Mission,” said Lysa Allison, executive director of Cornerstone Rescue Mission. “All of the change gathered does make a significant impact, and it helps us buy food, keep the lights on, and provide vital services to the neediest in our community. Everybody who donates is part of the success of a lot of people who are turning their lives around.”
Airport officials said the effort is designed to be simple and effective while keeping donations local.
“This is a simple action that fits naturally into the travel process,” said Toni Broom, airport deputy director of finance and administration. “When thousands of passengers pass through the checkpoint, those coins add up and stay local, where they can have a significant impact.”
The “Empty Pockets = Full Plates” initiative was inspired by the volume of loose change left behind at airport security checkpoints nationwide. Since its launch, the program has generated more than $25,000 for Cornerstone Rescue Mission, supporting food, shelter and services for people in need across Rapid City and western South Dakota.
