SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Oct. 24, 2025) — The Board of Directors of Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD) has appointed Nick Moen as the organization’s new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective Oct. 27.
Moen brings more than a decade of leadership experience in higher education, nonprofit athletics, and community engagement. He most recently served as Assistant Director of Athletics Administration at Augustana University, where he led partnership development and secured record-breaking sponsorship revenue for the university’s athletic department.
His previous experience includes leadership roles at the University of Sioux Falls and as General Manager of the Sioux Falls Sunfish Baseball Club, where he helped launch and establish the community-based franchise.
“Nick embodies the spirit of Special Olympics — dedication, teamwork, and respect for every individual,” said David Herbster, Vice-Chair of the SOSD Board of Directors. “His leadership will strengthen our mission to provide year-round sports training, competitions, inclusion, and health programs across the state.”
Moen succeeds longtime SOSD President and CEO Darryl Nordquist, who is transitioning into a fundraising and advisory role after 18 years leading the organization. Under Nordquist’s leadership, SOSD expanded statewide impact, increased programming, and cultivated a strong culture of inclusion.
“As we celebrate Darryl’s remarkable legacy, we welcome Nick with great excitement and confidence,” said Monica Burgess, Chair of the SOSD Board of Directors. “Together, we look forward to building on a foundation of inclusion, excellence, and joy that continues to change lives across our state.”
Moen said he looks forward to continuing the organization’s mission of inclusion and empowerment.
“I’m deeply honored to join Special Olympics South Dakota,” Moen said. “This movement represents the very best of who we are — inclusion, community, and togetherness. I’m excited to celebrate the incredible spirit of our athletes and to help build a unified and compassionate South Dakota.”
The SOSD Board described Moen as a people-centered leader whose authenticity, compassion, and energy align with the organization’s mission. His appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Special Olympics South Dakota, which serves thousands of athletes and volunteers across the state through sports, health, and leadership programs.
