PIERRE, S.D. — Farmers markets across South Dakota will join a nationwide celebration August 3–9 as part of National Farmers Market Week 2025, spotlighting the important role local markets play in building community, strengthening food systems, and supporting small-scale producers.
The observance, proclaimed annually by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and coordinated by the Farmers Market Coalition (FMC), highlights the economic, social and health benefits farmers markets bring to communities across the country.
South Dakota is home to 50 farmers markets, from urban hubs like Rapid City to rural towns throughout the Black Hills and beyond. The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) keeps an updated list of market locations, schedules and vendor offerings at sdspecialtyproducers.org/farmers-markets.
“Markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve,” said Willa Sheikh, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “As we look to the future, farmers markets will continue to lead efforts to adapt, respond, innovate, and advocate for our local food systems.”

Events Across South Dakota
Several local markets are marking the week with special events:
- Brookings Farmers Market will host Pollinator Day on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon, featuring games, honey tastings, planting demonstrations and family-friendly activities centered on bees and other pollinators.
- Brandon SD Farmers Market will honor Sioux Falls Navy Week with a live performance by the Navy Band Great Lakes from 11 a.m. to noon on Aug. 9.
Local Support and Resources
To strengthen the state’s farmers market network, SDSPA established the South Dakota Farmers Market Coalition, a chapter offering quarterly virtual meetings, educational programming, and full access to FMC resources. SDSPA members can join the chapter for a $15 annual fee.
Markets are more than places to buy fresh produce—they’re hubs for community connection, small business growth and local resilience. As farmers markets continue to evolve, their impact remains clear across South Dakota and the Black Hills.
