Gov. Rhoden Appoints Jim Schmidt to South Dakota Board of Economic Development

PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden has appointed Lincoln County Commissioner Jim Schmidt to the South Dakota Board of Economic Development, the state announced Tuesday.

“South Dakota relies on strong leaders like Jim who dedicate their lives to service and leave things better than they found them,” Gov. Rhoden said in a statement. “I am confident that he and the rest of the Board of Economic Development will help me keep South Dakota Open for Opportunity.”

Schmidt brings a wealth of experience in both public service and organizational leadership. He has held prominent roles including President of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, President of the Children’s Home Society, and Executive Vice President of the American Cancer Society of the Dakotas. He also served as Director of the Sioux Empire Housing Partnership.

His background in education includes time as a high school teacher, school counselor, and as President of Killian Community College in Sioux Falls.

“I wish to thank Governor Rhoden for the opportunity to serve on the Board of Economic Development,” Schmidt said. “I’m looking forward to working with the Governor and the members of the board in recruiting new businesses and expanding job opportunities across the State of South Dakota.”

Schmidt earned a Bachelor of Arts from Augustana College and a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota.

The South Dakota Board of Economic Development plays a key role in guiding policies and investments that stimulate economic growth throughout the state, including in regions like Rapid City and the Black Hills.
