STEAM Ahead: Rapid City Students Explore, Innovate, and Achieve

RAPID CITY, S.D. — More than 1,200 local students are reaping the benefits of engaging, hands-on learning beyond the traditional classroom thanks to the 21st Century Discovery and Club Hub Programs, which will be celebrated Tuesday, July 15, at General Beadle Elementary during the annual Great STEAM Expedition.

The event showcases the transformative impact of Out-of-School-Time (OST) programs in Rapid City, South Dakota, uniting students from seven sites across the Rapid City Area Schools district for a day of exploration in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

The 21st Century programs are operated by the Community and Family Services Division of Black Hills Special Services Cooperative (BHSSC) in partnership with RCAS, with support from a $1.3 million district investment in the 2024–25 school year. Program sites include Rapid Valley, Knollwood, General Beadle, South Park, Horace Mann, South Middle and North Middle schools.

“These programs do more than fill afterschool hours,” said BHSSC officials. “They build academic skills, confidence and community.”

OST Programs Drive Academic and Social Gains

The 21st Century Discovery and Club Hub programs provide academic enrichment, tutoring, classroom-aligned STEAM instruction, social-emotional learning, and career exploration in a safe, structured environment.

Their results are measurable: 60% of students saw a decrease in in-school suspensions compared to the previous school year. In surveys, students said they felt more secure, cared for and confident. Families reported improvements in their children’s grades, behavior and overall well-being.

Community Collaboration at the Core

BHSSC credits the success of the OST programs to its collaboration with Rapid City Area Schools, support from community partners, and the dedication of program staff. The partnership reflects a shared goal of building stronger connections between students, families, and their education.
