Rapid City’s Cohort Brewery Expands with Purchase of Miner Brewing Company in Hill City

New Miner Brewing ownership marks a major expansion for Cohort Brewery into the heart of the Black Hills.

Cohort Craft Brewery has announced the acquisition of the former Miner Brewing Company property in Hill City. This move marks Cohort’s first expansion and introduces a new chapter for the iconic Black Hills location, now operating under the name Cohort-Black Hills.

The acquisition follows the closure of Miner Brewing Company and its sister establishment, Prairie Berry Winery, at the end of 2024.

Founded just four years ago, Cohort Brewery quickly became a favorite on Rapid City’s south side, known for its creative beer styles and carbonated craft meads made with locally sourced South Dakota honey. Cohort plans to bring its community-driven model and innovative offerings to an even larger audience.

“Since opening, we’ve seen healthy organic growth. Our 5th Street location is nearing capacity,” said Jason Kingsbury, owner of Cohort Brewery. “When the Miner space became available, it was perfect timing and a perfect location.”

The new Cohort-Black Hills location offers what Kingsbury calls “the most scenic brewery in the Black Hills,” featuring an open amphitheater and panoramic views of the Hills. Cohort plans to begin brewing and serving on-site as staffing and renovations get underway.

A Reflection of Regional Growth

The purchase of Miner Brewing Company is not only a win for Cohort but a reflection of the broader momentum in the Black Hills economy.

“I am thrilled to see Cohort Craft Brewery expanding to a second location,” said Kallie Ruland, business development manager at Elevate Rapid City. “It’s been a pleasure getting to know Jason and his team throughout this journey. Their growth is a true reflection of the strength of our regional economy and the vibrant atmosphere of the Black Hills. Cohort has built a strong reputation for its unique craft beer, and this expansion will allow even more people to experience their exceptional brews.”

What’s Next Under New Miner Brewing Ownership

Cohort plans to retain much of the core Miner Brewing staff, while adding 10–15 new front-end positions and 2–4 back-end roles. The transition will also bring opportunities for local craftsmen as the space undergoes updates and improvements. Customers can expect an expanded tap list, the introduction of Cohort’s signature meads, and the same community-centric approach that has defined the brand since day one.

“Cohort’s focus has always been fostering community,” said Kingsbury. “We can’t wait to be a part of the central Black Hills community.”

Powered by Local Support

The project was financed with the support of the South Dakota Development Corporation and First National Bank, through an SBA 504 loan. Kingsbury specifically thanked Jess at SDDC and Eric at First National for believing in the vision and helping to streamline the process.

Preserving Legacy, Brewing New Opportunities

As the new owners of Miner Brewing Company, Cohort Brewery is poised to preserve the legacy of a beloved Black Hills destination while infusing it with new life and flavor. It’s a move that blends tradition and innovation—true to Cohort’s ethos, and to the spirit of the region.
