Tourism plays a pivotal role in South Dakota’s economy, supporting more than 7,200 jobs across various sectors, including yours. While the breathtaking landscapes and iconic landmarks of the Black Hills are undeniable draws for visitors, it is the personal interactions and hospitality of locals that truly define the Rapid City experience.
For those immersed in Rapid City’s tourism ecosystem, whether as frontline staff welcoming guests or as employers shaping the visitor experience, the Rapid City Area Tourism Ambassador Program™ offers a unique pathway to enhance skills and knowledge. When individuals participate in this program and become a Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA), they gain access to specialized training that focuses on enriching their understanding of Rapid City’s history, attractions, and the art of delivering exceptional customer service.
About the Program
The program curriculum covers a diverse range of topics. Some include discovering the Rapid City area and mastering strategies for exceeding customer expectations. Participants engage in pre-course work and an in-class session that provides them with practical insights and tools to excel in their roles within the tourism industry.
CTAs who have completed the program speak highly of its value. Tera Ness, a Certified Tourism Ambassador from the Holiday Inn Downtown, reflects on the experience: “It was a good reminder of all Rapid City has to offer anyone visiting.” Similarly, Michelle Pawelski of Firehouse Wine Cellars was enthused by the historical depth of the pre-class readings, stating, “I love all the history included in the pre-class reading. So much new information I did not know and can’t wait to share.”
Whether you are directly interacting with visitors on the frontlines or shaping the broader visitor experience through leadership and management, becoming a Certified Tourism Ambassador is an investment in our community’s success. Together, we can ensure that every visitor to Rapid City leaves with unforgettable memories and a desire to return.
